The Making of A Town

‘Lamka,’ an original and indigenous name of the town, literally means ‘Road Crossings’. In 1930, Pu Zenhang Valte founded the present Zenhang Lamka which was originally named, ‘Bijang Loubuk.’ Around the same time in 1930-31, Pu Phungkhothang Guite founded the present Hiangtam Lamka. These two villages were collectively known as Lamka.  At that time when they established these twin villages, there were no other villages nearby and the whole area was covered in thick forests, abundant in wild animals, teemed with mosquitoes and devoid of people. Malaria was too common and people from the hills were reluctant to live in the valley. But gradually, Lamka began to flourish from a village to become one of the  biggest towns in Manipur.

Pu Zenhang Valte was presented/ rewarded ‘The Khamen Chatpa’ by Maharaja Bodhachandra Singh, the last ruler of the Kingdom of Manipur for his contribution to Manipur 18th January, 1948 . It was celebrated with pomp at Bijang Loubuk (present day Zenhang Lamka) as seen in picture with the Khamen Chatpa Pheijom taken in the same year (circa 1948)
