Modernising The Town: Spaces and Traces

Lamka as a town takes its form and shape in unimaginable ways. Education remains one of the keys in modernising the town. Besides, the town continued to grow with time as modern transport, infrastructure, entertainment, etc were introduced.

Padma Shri awarded to Lhingjaneng Gangte — Lhingjaneng Gangte received the Padma Shri award from the then President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed in 1975 at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. She was the first woman of Manipur to be conferred the Padma Shri from the Government of India for her dedication in the field of Social Welfare.

Taking photographs with vehicles while travelling was a common scene especially in the 1960s and 70s.

Book Rooms occupies an important space in town as they were the go to place for buying bibles, church related books and more which were normally not sold at commercial bookstores. Book Room of the 60s and 70s.

Lalhmingliana Torell who owned and ran ‘Sikni Eng’ news from the 70s until it was shut down in the early 2000s. The picture was taken while he was working in his office.
